THIRD COAST PERCUSSION AND SÉRGIO AND CLARICE ASSAD NOMINATED

FOR THE 2022 GRAMMY AWARDS® IN THE CATEGORIES OF: BEST CHAMBER

MUSIC/SMALL ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE, BEST CONTEMPORARY CLASSICAL COMPOSITIONAND BEST ENGINEERED ALBUM, CLASSICAL

The trailblazing Third Coast Percussion (TCP), celebrated Brazilian guitarist Sérgio Assad, and multi-talented Brazilian vocalist/composer/instrumentalist Clarice Assad released the album Archetypes on March 12, 2021 via Cedille Records. The recording—which features a collaboratively composed program conjuring 12 universal archetypes— was recently nominated for the GRAMMY Awards® in three categories: Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance; Best Contemporary Classical Composition; and Best Engineered Album, Classical. This marks the first time that TCP is nominated for a GRAMMY Award® as both performers and composers. These are also the first GRAMMY® nominations for Sérgio and Clarice Assad.

The musical work comprising Archetypes depicts figures—such as the Rebel, Lover, Magician, Jester, Hero, and Explorer—through 12 short pieces that combine imaginative chamber music with Latin jazz rhythms. The Assads each composed four of the pieces, while the four TCP members—Sean Connors, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin, and David Skidmore—each wrote a piece based on an archetype of their choosing. Their collaborative efforts resulted in 12 striking musical portraits that highlight TCP’s vast color palette, Sérgio’s guitar mastery, and Clarice’s versatile musicianship.
