Akshay Bhatia, a 19-year-old golfer primed for the PGA Tour, met his girlfriend and caddy as one does in the modern era: by sliding into her DMs on Instagram.

Bhatia won the Korn Ferry Tour’s Bahamas Great Exuma Classic last week at Sandals Emerald Bay by shooting a 65 – seven under par – in the final round. He became the third youngest golfer, behind Sungjae Im and Jason Day, to win a Korn Ferry tournament.

According to Daniel Rapaport of Golf Digest, this victory for Bhatia “all but lock[s] up a PGA Tour card for next year.”

Bhatia’s caddy? Presleigh Schultz, whom Bhatia blindly direct messaged on Instagram last year before he was slated to play in the Valero Texas Open.

“I was like, ‘Hey, let’s meet up,” Bhatia told a Korn Ferry Tour producer this past week.

“You know, she’s never watched golf. Her little brother plays a little bit, but she didn’t really know what was going on.

“And so we met there, and now she’s caddying in my first Korn Ferry event as a member, which is awesome.”

Schultz acknowledged the surreality of it all.

“I don’t know anything about golf and now I’m caddying for him,” she laughed.

Bhatia turned pro at 17 years old, bypassing college.

“I struggled mentally, I missed every cut,” he told Golf.com. “I had a lot of people expecting me to play well and it didn’t happen.”

However, the pandemic gave him time to reflect.

“I got to sit back, talk to my coach, realize where I’m at in my life,” he said. “After that, you know, I’ve just climbed the mountain slowly and slowly and slowly.”
