Game Pokémon Legends: Arceus smashes sales records in UK – Games charts 29 January

Game

The new Pokémon game has enjoyed the fourth biggest launch ever for the franchise, taking up 50% of all UK physical sales last week.

Although technically it’s just a spin-off, Pokémon Legends: Arceus has proven an instant success, beating the launch week of every Pokémon game in the UK except Sun/Moon, Sword/Shield, and Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby.

Digital sales aren’t included in any of this data though, so if they were added in the game could well have beaten one or more of those. At the very least it’s also the biggest ever single version launch (since mainline games launch in pairs), beating Pokémon Yellow from 2020 and every other spin-off.

Along with the positive critical reception for the game it suggests that the attempt to create a new style of open world game has been a major success and will likely influence the next mainline entry.

The other big new release of the week was PlayStation 5 remaster compilation Uncharted: Legacy Of Thieves Collection, which has had a much more controversial reception, give its high price and the lack of change from the original PlayStation 4 versions.

Given those limitations though it still seems to have performed reasonably well, entering the UK charts at number five.

The third and final new release of the week was Rugby 22 at number 33, although as with all the other games in the retail chart its performance does not include digital sales.
