Nickelodeon will be broadcasting its second NFL game in the last two seasons on Sunday.

Last season, the children’s network Nickelodeon broadcasted its first NFL game between the Saints and Bears. While CBS acts as the main broadcast, Nickelodeon’s broadcast is more “kid-friendly” and explains the game to kids who might not regularly watch football.

This season, Nickelodeon will showcase the Cowboys vs. 49ers wild-card game on Sunday, Jan. 16. Here’s more information about why the children’s network is now broadcasting NFL games and content.

Game Why does Nickelodeon broadcast NFL games?

Last season, Nickelodeon broadcasted the NFC wild-card game between the Saints and the Bears as a chance to introduce young viewers to the NFL. The announcers, CBS’s Noah Eagle, CBS’s Nate Burleson and Nick star Gabrielle Nevaeh Green, help explain what’s going on in the game for young viewers to understand. Green often asks questions about what’s happening in the game.

After the success of last season’s game, the Nickelodeon and CBS Sports signed a partnership ahead of the 2021 season to allow Nickelodeon to broadcast at least one game again. They also introduced a new weekly serious “NFL Slimetime” that premiered this season.

In regards to the partnership, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nickelodeon Brian Robbins released a statement explaining the importance of the deal.

“Our coverage of the NFL Wild Card game was literally a game-changer in so many ways, and the sensational response absolutely proved there’s huge demand for sports content with the kind of kids and family point of view that only Nickelodeon can deliver,” Robbins said. “In this next stage of our tremendous partnership with the NFL and CBS Sports, we’re going to raise the bar again and help innovate sports programming to bring the whole family together for one-of-a-kind viewing experiences.”

Game How the Nickelodeon broadcast differs from the regular NFL broadcast

Nickelodeon’s broadcast is most known for its virtual effects, with the main one being the virtual slime celebration when a touchdown is scored.

Additionally, Nickelodeon plans on continuing its virtual graphics this year, with its infamous orange being used to show the first down lines, for example. They will also highlight an augmented reality blimp that will fly throughout the stadium.

Pregame and halftime shows are both planned for the broadcast, but the information is unknown at this time about what those will be. In last year’s game, they showed a clip of the famous “Spongebob Squarepants” football halftime show episode. Various Nickelodeon stars will also make guest appearances throughout the game.

But, what makes Nickelodeon’s broadcast really stand out is their “NVP Award,” which acts as their MVP award. Last year, Mitch Trubisky won the award.

Game 2021 Nickelodeon NFL game success

Nickelodeon’s broadcast of the Saints vs. Bears last year resulted in their most-watched program in over four years. The broadcast brought in around two billion impressions on Twitter, and it was the top trending topic that afternoon.

Clips of the virtual slime on the field went viral, along with videos of some of Nickelodeon’s beloved characters making appearances.
