This year’s K-League football season will kick off next month, making its earliest start since its founding in 1983.

The new season will begin on Feb. 19 to accommodate the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which opens in November.

The World Cup is usually held in summer, but an exception was made for the Qatar event due to the sweltering climate of the Middle Eastern country.

K-League champions Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors will launch their title defense in the season opener against Suwon FC in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province.

Suwon last December signed a contract with Lee Seung-woo, who played for several European clubs after training at the youth academy of Spain’s prestigious FC Barcelona, while Jeonbuk early last year acquired Paik Seung-ho, who also attended the youth academy, from Germany’s Bundesliga.
